No matter what your current skill level is, FII Level 1 course is not just recommended, if you have never taken any structured freediving course, it is strictly advised.
Number one, it covers all the rudimentary safety protocol required of a freediver, whether you are pool training performing statics, or out in the open ocean spearfishing with your dive buddies, the safety training is incredibly comprehensive for a basic freedive course and is of utmost importance to any freediver.
Second, the level 1 course teaches all the appropriate fundamentals needed for a proper freediving technique. If you are already a 20+m (66ft) diver, the level one course will teach you to be more efficient in your techniques and you will now be diving 20m a lot easier with minimal energy expenditure for more bottom time and more of a relaxed diving style, which in my opinion is one of the most important factors for a spearfisherman. The point is, no matter what your skill level is before the course, you will benefit from the level 1 course learning the proper techniques required for getting to the next level. When most people go straight into the level 2 class, they spend most of their time and money learning the proper fundamentals that are taught in level 1, and most people are limited by this and never get their money’s worth of a level 2 course because they are stuck learning the basic fundamentals taught in level 1. When I started training with the US Worlds Team a few years ago, these guys were all great divers. But in order to get them prepared to dive in the deep diving conditions that were required at the World Championships in Croatia, I had to start with the basics. By teaching them the basic fundamentals taught in the level 1 course first, we were then able to move into level 2 techniques more seamlessly and so on, till we were all diving 140ft repeatedly and safely multiple hours each day during our scouting leading up to and during the competition. The fundamentals taught in the level 1 course are the building blocks that any freediver should have in their toolbox to reach any desired depth. |
